Hi

I have a partitioned disk with Data on D:\ and programmes
on C:\

I have loads of space on D but since I put buddy back up
on my C drive is nearly full. I cant see anywhere on
buddy back up where you tell the system where to store
buddies' backups on your PC

Can anyone help? Or is this a gap in the features?
Would like to find a way round it as otherwise I'll have
to deinstall.

Hi Pete,

Had to do this myself, very easy.  I did it this way:

- pause BB
- create your folder on d:, ie; d:\buddybackup
- In BB Options |  Advanced | Advanced Settings change the location to d:\buddybackup
- Close BB completely (including from the control box)
- Admin EDIT: Don't do this step! See post below [[[In explorer move your folder from c: to d: keeping the folder levels the same]]]
- when (and only when) complete, reload BB and that's it done

Hi all,

Sorry - at the risk of censoring Andrew, I just wanted to correct one thing.

By default backups are saved at:

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\BuddyBackup

Vista/7: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\BuddyBackup

Andrew is mostly correct - you can change where BuddyBackup saves its files in the Options section as he described.

HOWEVER this only applies to newly created backups (either yours or ones belonging to your buddies).

You CANNOT move existing backups from the C: drive however!!!

If you've already got files created at that location, then they're stuck there.

Andrew: your file move probably appeared to work because BuddyBackup hasn't needed the files yet. I guarantee though that if/when it needs to access those files (e.g. your buddy asks to restore files), it will crash. The reason is that BuddyBackup's database refers to the absolute paths, not the relative paths.

You can try and fix this, but I can't guarantee this will work.

To fix accidentally broken paths:

  1. Exit BuddyBackup
  2. On keyboard press Win+R
  3. Enter the following:

    C:\Program Files\BuddyBackup\BuddyBackup.exe -clean2

  4. Press enter
BuddyBackup will do a self check to remove all of the missing files. It won't correct the backups though - I'm afraid that if you have moved all of these then they're lost forever. After this clean, it should, however carry on and re-backup your files.

Hope this clarifies things.

Sorry if I mislead, I believe now that if fact what I did was move from one drive to another drive but when complete I renamed the logical drives thus no problem.

i.e; machine had c:\500gb. Moved all to new 1.5tb D:\ drive then changed drive letters (and of course installed windows blah blah blah)

So if logical drive is the same afterwards then all is well.

You could probably do this by mounting the new drive (or partition) on the path i.e.

In XP
  1. Copy the contents of "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\BuddyBackup"to the root of the new drive (or partition)
  2. Rename "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\BuddyBackup" to "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\BuddyBackup.ORIGINAL"
  3. Create a new empty directory "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\BuddyBackup"
  4. Mount the new disk (or partition) on this new empty directory. (see below)
  5. Test
  6. and test again.
  7. When happy it all works delete the original directory.
Mounting a drive (or partition) on a directory:
  1. Right click on my computer.
  2. Click on Manage
  3. Click on Disk Management
  4. Right click on new disk (or partition) formated that you want to use to store the data
  5. Click on "change Drive Letter and Paths..."
  6. Click on "Add..."
  7. Browse "Mount in the following empty NTFS folder:" to "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\BuddyBackup"
  8. Click O.K.
Hope this helps.
