Adding Buddies

The most common way of using BuddyBackup, is to get it to backup to your friends’ computers securely over the internet. You do this by adding "buddies".

A Buddy is a friend who is also running BuddyBackup, or it might be another computer you own which has BuddyBackup installed.

There are two ways of adding buddies – either you can backup to an existing Buddy, or you can invite your family, friends and colleagues to become Buddies so that you can start backing up to each other.

When a buddy has been added, BuddyBackup can start backing up your files onto the Buddy. Your files will be encrypted before they're sent meaning your buddy can't ever read them.

Invite Buddies

You can invite as many people as you like to become your Buddies. You can do this easily by importing contacts through your email or Facebook account. Or you can enter their email addresses manually.

The more people you back up to the safer your data becomes. (We recommend a minimum of two Buddies.)

Here’s how to invite Buddies:

To add a new Buddy:

  1. Open the BuddyBackup control panel (see here)
  2. In the Buddies panel, on the right, click Invite Buddy
  3. You’ll see the InviteBuddies wizard below:

  4. Select ‘Import my contacts from my e-mail account and fill in your email address and password.
  5. Alternatively, you can select ‘Enter e-mail addresses manually’
  6. BuddyBackup will automatically send your friends an email inviting them to be your buddy. You can also add a personal message.
  7. You will be informed when your friend accepts your invitation and then you can start backing up!

Find an existing Buddy:

  1. Open the BuddyBackup control panel (see here)
  2. In the Buddies panel, on the right, click Add Buddy
  3. Click Backup to a Buddy
  4. Enter either the BuddyBackup username of your friend, or their email address.
  5. Press Next
  6. If the e-mail address can't be found, then BuddyBackup will offer to send an e-mail inviting your friend to start using BuddyBackup.
  7. If there are several matches for an e-mail address, then BuddyBackup will show you the matches. You can then select which ones you want to add.

Your newly added buddy should appear in the Buddies panel at the bottom of the window.

Your friend will now be given the option of allowing you to backup to them. Once they have done this, BuddyBackup will attempt to connect and will start backing up your files.

You can also add a USB drive as a buddy.
