Restoring Files

There are two cases where you might want to restore files using BuddyBackup.

  1. Disaster Recovery: You've had a major disaster and your PC has been lost and you need to restore your files.
  2. Day to day restoring: Your PC is fine, but you've accidentally deleted a file and want to get it back. Or, you might want to go back to an older version of a file.

Disaster Recovery

The whole purpose of BuddyBackup is to protect your files in the event of a catastrophe such as fire, flood, hardware failure or theft.

If you do have this happen, restoring files from a buddy is really straight forward.

Step 1: Re-install BuddyBackup:

  1. Install BuddyBackup (either on your friends PC, or on your new replacement PC). You can download it here.
  2. If you are running BuddyBackup on your new replacement computer:
    • Start BuddyBackup as normal (see here).
    • When prompted during setup, select Use Existing Account.
    • Skip to step 4.
  3. If you are running BuddyBackup on a friends PC you can use "guest mode":
    • Click the windows Start button
    • Choose All Programs, BuddyBackup, BuddyBackup (guest mode)
  4. Enter your username and password. If you have forgotten your details click the Forgot your password link
  5. BuddyBackup will now reload the list of your buddies and other backup locations.
  6. BuddyBackup will then try and connect to all of your buddies to locate your backups. You could ask your buddies to come online to speed this process up. Now is a good time to insert your USB backup drive if you used one.
  7. Click on the Restore tab.
  8. As your buddies come online, the list of files will begin to be filled up and you should see all of your files become visible. This process may take a while depending on how many files you have backed up.
  9. You should wait until it shows that all the buddies have been contacted (otherwise the list may not show a complete list of your backups)
  10. Proceed to Restore your files, below.

Step 2: Restoring your files

  1. Click on the Restore tab
  2. Find the file(s) you want to restore and tick them
  3. Click Next
  4. Decide if you want to restore the files to their original location or to a different place.
  5. Choose the time of backups you want (either the latest or an older date)
  6. Click Finish

BuddyBackup will now connect to your buddies to download and restore your files. This process can take a long time depending on how many files you have and how fast your internet connection is.

You can continue to you use your PC while this is happening, however.

Day to Day Restoring

With BuddyBackup you can quickly restore accidentally deleted or overwritten files. You can also "roll-back" files to an earlier version.

To restore files in this manner:

  1. Open the BuddyBackup control panel (see here)
  2. Click on the Restore tab
  3. Find the file(s) you want to restore and tick them
  4. Click Next
  5. Decide if you want to restore the files to their original location or to a different place.
  6. Choose the time of backups you want (either the latest or an older date)
  7. Click Finish

Using Windows Explorer

You can also do this from the Windows Explorer. Right Click on an item in Explorer and choose Roll-back using BuddyBackup
