Maintaining BuddyBackup

For the most part you will not have to do anything to keep BuddyBackup working. However, there are a few things you might have to do occasionally to keep it running smoothly.

Ignoring files

BuddyBackup is designed to watch all the files in the watched directories. However, you may find that you do not want every single file in that directory to be watched and backed up. Or, you may not want BuddyBackup to watch particular types of files (such as movie files, for example).

To deal with this you can get BuddyBackup to ignore files. This means that they will not be watched by BuddyBackup and will not bebacked up to your buddies.

There are two methods of ignoring files:

  • Ignoring particular individual files
  • Ignoring files of a particular file extension (e.g.".jpg")
When you specify that a given file extension should be ignored, this applies to all watched directories.

For example, if you say that ".jpg" files should be ignored, all ".jpg" files on your entire computer will be ignored.

Ignoring individual files

To ignore individual files either:

  1. Open up the BuddyBackup explorer
  2. Locate the file you want by browsing through the Watched Files section
  3. Right click on the file in the right hand panel
  4. Click on the Add "XXX" to ignored files list (where "XXX" is the name of the file you clicked).

Or:

  1. Open up the BuddyBackup explorer
  2. Click on the Tools menu and choose Options
  3. Click on the Ignored files tab
  4. Press the Add button below the Ignored files box
  5. Enter the full file path of the file to ignore

Ignoring files with a particular extension

To ignore files with a particular extension either:

  1. Open up the BuddyBackup explorer
  2. Locate a file which has the file extension that you want ignored by browsing through the Watched Files section
  3. Right click on the file in the right hand panel
  4. Click on the Add "*.XXX" to ignored files list option (where "XXX" is the extension you want ignored)

Or:

  1. Open up the BuddyBackup explorer
  2. Click on the Tools menu and choose Options
  3. Click on the Ignored files tab
  4. Press the Add button below the Ignored file extensions box
  5. Enter the extension of the file you want ignored
It is possible to have a file which is now ignored but was previously being watched. In this case new changes to the file are ignored, but the old file may still be backed up.

You will be asked when ignoring files if you want to delete any old backups of the files in question.

Deleting old backups

BuddyBackup keeps a copy of every change to every file being watched. These files are stored in an efficient format which means that only the differenced between each format are saved.

However, you may find that your backup allowance starts to run out as you regularly edit files.

At any time you can delete the old backups of a file. Deleting the backups will remove the old historical backups stored on both your computer and on the computers belonging to your backup buddies.

When deleting backups the original files are not affected.

When you have deleted the old backups, BuddyBackup will start backing up the files again as normal. The only difference is that all the old versions will not be stored.

To delete backups of individual files:

  1. Open up the BuddyBackup explorer
  2. Locate and select the file you want to delete by browsing in the Watched files section.
  3. Right click on the file in the right hand panel
  4. Choose the Delete backups options

To delete backups of whole directories

  1. Open up the BuddyBackup explorer
  2. Locate the directory you want by browsing through the Watched files section
  3. Right click on the directory you want to delete backups for in the left hand panel
  4. Choose the Delete backups option
You can also delete backups of recovered files by using the same instructions above, but browsing in the Recovered files section instead.

Deleting Backup Buddies

At any time you can delete backup buddies. Deleting a backup buddy means:

  • They will delete any backups they are holding for you
  • BuddyBackup will not attempt to backup to them in future
  • They will still be able to backup to you unless you block them as well.

To delete a backup buddy:

  1. Open the BuddyBackup explorer
  2. In the bottom left panel, right click on the buddy you want to delete
  3. Choose the Delete buddy option
