This page contains information on settings and options which can be used to
customise the behaviour of BuddyBackup.
Accessing the Options
To access to Options screen:
- Open up the BuddyBackup explorer
- Click the Tools menu and choose Options
Basic Options
The following are basic options, some of which have already been discussed elsewhere in the User Guide:
- Backup Allowance - allows setting of how much space you want for your backups and how much space you will provide for your buddies. See Setting up.
- Backup Copies - allows setting of how many copies of each file you would like backed up. See Setting up.
- Buddy Permissions - allows setting of whether users are allowed or not allowed to backup to you. See Managing buddies.
- Ignored files - allows you to mark files as ignored. See Maintaining BuddyBackup.
- Advanced - allows advanced settings to be altered. See below.
Accessing settings without running BuddyBackup
You can access some of the settings of BuddyBackup when it is not running by going to Start, All Programs, BuddyBackupand choosing Change Settings.
This tool is included to allow changing of settings which might be preventing BuddyBackup from working properly.
Advanced settings
The advanced settings are mainly for expect users, or if a member of the support
team have given you instructions on what to change.
Here is a brief description of what each item does:
- TCP Port - this is the TCP port which is bound to locally on your PC to accept incoming connections using TCP. Change this value if you want to accept incoming TCP connections on a different port.
- UCP Client Port - this is the UDP port which is bound to locally to send outgoing data to certain buddies. This is required for buddies who may be behind NAT routers.
- Choose unique UDP Server port - this specified whether to automatically choose an appropriate UDP server port based on your IP address. This is important for situations where more than one person use BuddyBackup from behind the same NAT router
- UDP Server Port - this allows you to manually specify a local UDP port to bind to, to receive incoming connections from certain buddies
- Port forwarding has been set up - this allows you to specify that you have setup port forwarding (for situations where you are behind a NAT router which is having connection problems). If this is ticked then all your buddies will know that they should try to connect to you using TCP. It is up to you to set up the port forwarding settings on your router (as described here).
Changes to any of these settings will required BuddyBackup to be restarted.
Also, it may take up to an hour for all your buddies to become aware of any changes to these details so you may find they cannot connect to you for a period of time.
To see immediate results ask one of your buddies to restart BuddyBackup and see if they can connect then.
