When you run BuddyBackup for the first time, you will be presented with the following wizard:

If you have not used BuddyBackup before then choose the first option and press Next.
If you already have a BuddyBackup account then choose the second option and press Next.

The next step is to choose a username and password. A username should be something which is memorable and only contains letters, numbers of the underscore character ("_"). You will need to remember this username if you ever have to recover lost data.
In some situations you may not be able to get the username you want because someone else is already using it. You will be told if this happens, in which case you will have to choose a different username.
You also have to choose a password at this point. This password is used to make all your files unreadable by other people. You should try to choose a strong password.
You will also need to remember this password to be able to recover lost files.
If you forget or lose this password you will not be able to ever recover your backed up files, so consider writing it down and storing it in a safe place.
Press Next when you have entered a username and password.

You will then be asked to enter an e-mail. This allows other buddies to find you by entering your e-mail. This e-mail will also be visible to your backup buddies. You can choose not to enter an e-mail, in which case please leave the section blank.
Press Next to continue.

The next step is to choose how much backup allowance you want. This is how much data (in Megabytes) you can backup onto your backup buddies (see the Backup allowance label). Changing the amount of data you want to backup changes how much space you provide for your buddies to backup onto you (see the Total shared space label).
BuddyBackup works because while you can backup your data to your buddies, they can also back up their data to you. Because of this, BuddyBackup will arrange for a certain amount of space to be available to other people to backup to you (but only if you have given them permission first).
Adjust the slider to select how much backup space you want.
Press Next to continue.

The next step is to choose how many copies of your files you want to keep.
BuddyBackup can keep multiple copies of each file on different buddies. This is useful as it means your files are safer and also more easy to recover in the event of data loss.
Note, however, that each copy uses up more of your backup allowance. For example, if you have 100 MB of backup allowance and you choose to keep 2 copies of your files, each MB of compressed data you want to backup will take up 2 MB of your allowance so you will only be able to backup 50MB of actual data. See the label marked "Amount of actual data you can back up" for an estimate of how much compressed data you can backup.
BuddyBackup will only ever backup one copy of a particular file to each buddy so you should make sure you have enough buddies to backup the number of copies you asked for - for example if you want 4 copies of your files, you need at least 4 backup buddies.
A good value is between 2 and 4 copies.
Press the "Next" button.

You will now be given a chance to check your settings.
If you want to access the advanced options, press the Advanced settings button. These settings are only needed if you are an expert user or are having problems with BuddyBackup. Please see Advanced settings for more details.
Once you are happy, press OK. You should shortly see the main BuddyBackup window open.
