Starting BuddyBackup
BuddyBackup automatically starts when you log in to your computer. You can also manually run it by going to Start, All Programs, BuddyBackup.
BuddyBackup may also run automatically when you install it.
The status icon
BuddyBackup shows a small status icon in the task bar. You can find this at the bottom right corner of your screen:
The icon shows a different colour depending on how well backed up your files are:
- All watched files are fully backed up
- All watched files are minimally backed up
- Some watched files are not backed up
The icon will appear grey when BuddyBackup is starting or is shutting down:
- BuddyBackup is starting up / shutting down
If you right click on the icon you get the choice of Open and Exit. Open displays the BuddyBackup explorer and Exit will close BuddyBackup.
If you hover your mouse over the icon, you will see brief information on how well backed up your files are.
Double clicking on the BuddyBackup icon will also open the explorer.
The BuddyBackup explorer
The BuddyBackup explorer is the main window which allows you to view backup information and to get the software to watch directories and add backup buddies.
To open the explorer right click on the status icon and choose Open. If you run BuddyBackup from the start menu then the explorer will automatically appear.

A - This panel allows you to view the files backed up by BuddyBackup. The Watched Files section shows files that are being watched. In this section you can see exactly which files are backed up to your buddies. Recovered Files contains files that have been recovered from your buddies. Watched Folders shows you the directories that are being watched. See Exploring files for more details.
B - This panel shows your backup buddies. See Managing buddies for more details.
C and D - These ares make up the Status Panel. This shows detailed information on your backups and how much of your backup allowance you have used. To view the status panel, single click on either the Watched files, Watched folders or Recovered files objects in the left panel.
E - This box shows which files are not backed up. Only 100 files are shown.
F - This bar shows quick information on your backups. At the far right is a blank area where information on current backups in progress is shown.
Buttons and menu options
There are four buttons in the explorer:
- This button allows you to choose which directories BuddyBackup should watch (see Watching Folders).
- This button refreshes the data shown in the explorer window. Press this if you want to make sure you have the most up to date information.
- This button allows you to add new backup buddies (see Managing Buddies).
- This button shows information how how much disc space is being used by BuddyBackup. Note that this can take some time to calculate as it has to sort through all the files being managed by BuddyBackup.
The File menu allows you to perform common tasks:
- Watch new directory - allows you to choose new folders to watch (see Watching Folders).
- Add new buddy - allows you to add a new backup buddy (see Managing Buddies).
- Minimise - hides the explorer. BuddyBackup will keep running in the background so your files will still be protected.
- Exit - closes the explorer and quits BuddyBackup. Your files will no longer be watched.
The Tools menu allows you to change settings and check your connection.
- Check Connection - this shows a wizard which will let you check your internet connection to make sure you can connect to other buddies and that your buddies can connect to you (see Connection Problems).
- Options - this allows you change BuddyBackup's settings (see Options).
