Exploring files
![]()
You can explore the files that BuddyBackup is watching in a similar way to using the standard Windows explorer. To explore the watched files, double click on the Watched Files object. You will then see a tree of directories which you can navigate as you would normally do in Windows:

When you explore watched files using the explorer, the files you see are actually the local copies of your files kept by BuddyBackup and not the original files on your hard drive.
For example, if you get BuddyBackup to watch a directory and then delete the directory from your computer, you will still be able to see the directory in the BuddyBackup explorer. This is because BuddyBackup has made private copies of your files.
The panel on the right of the explorer (which previously showed backup information) shows file details which help you see how well the file is backed up onto your buddies.
The Name column is the original name of the file.
The No. of Revisions column is a count of how many versions of this file BuddyBackup has stored. Every time you save the file, a copy of the file at that point is kept (assuming BuddyBackup is running).
The Backed up column shows whether the file is backed up onto your buddies. Fully indicates that the file is fully backed up, Minimally indicates that the file is minimally backed up and No indicates that the file is not backed up.
The Backed Up column refers to how well backed up the latest version of the file is. Older versions of the file might actually be backed up even if the latest version isn't. To get a clearer picture, double click on the file to see information about how well each version is backed up.
If you right click on a file, you will see a menu with the following options:
- Details - displays details of the watched file (see below).
- Delete backups - deletes the backup copies of the file(s) (see Deleting old backups).
- Add "XXX" to ignored files list - allows you to specify not to watch this particular file (see Ignoring files).
- Add "*.XXX" to ignored files list - allows you to specify not to watch any file with this file extension (see Ignoring files).
If you double click on a file you will be shown detailed file information.
File details
The file details windows shows details about a watched file. You can display this by double clicking on a file in the explorer.

The Date column shows when the version of the file was saved. The Size column shows how big the file was when it was saved. The Compressed Size column shows how much space the file takes up on your buddies. The Backed Up To column shows who the version is backed up to.
The Recover Version button allows you to recover a particular version of a file - simply click on the row you want to recover and press the button.
Note that you don't need your buddies online to do this - BuddyBackup will recover the file from its local copy.
Being able to recover old versions of files is a very useful facility. It enables you to go back in time to any old save of a particular file to recover information which you may have subsequently deleted.
Remember, you don't need your buddies to be online to be able to do this as the copies of the versions are stored locally on your computer.
