Recovering lost data

Day to day recovery
If you need to recover a file that has been lost or accidentally deleted, and your computer is working with no problems then all you need to do is use the BuddyBackup explorer. Simply find the file in the Watched Files section of the explorer, double click on it and choose which revision to recover. This will allow you to recover old versions of files (see Exploring files).
You can recover old lost files because BuddyBackup keeps a private copy of all the versions of your watched files and, assuming your computer is still working fine, then you can get them back again straight away without having to recover the files from your buddies.
Disaster recovery
This section describes what to do if you have had a total disaster and your computer is not working or has been destroyed, lost or stolen.
All you will required is another PC with an internet connection - either a friend or a colleagues' PC (this person does not have to be one of your backup buddies).
The steps to take to recover your files are then as follows:
1. Get your friend to download the BuddyBackup installer from here.
2. Install as normal except on the last step untick the box saying Run BuddyBackup.
If the owner of the PC already has BuddyBackup installed then you can skip steps 1 and 2. You will need them to exit BuddyBackup, however.
3. If possible, get in contact with your backup buddies and ask them to turn on their computers. 4. Go to Start from the Windows task bar. Select All Programs, BuddyBackup and click on BuddyBackup (guest mode). 5. Enter your username and password 6. The BuddyBackup window should open. You should see all your backup buddies listed as normal. 7. As you backup buddies come online, your files will be downloaded automatically. When this happens they will appear in the Recovered Files section of the explorer.
If not enough of your buddies are online then you will need to leave the program running so that when they do come online, your files will be recovered.
If this is not possible you may have to arrange a time when your buddies will be online and when you can use your friends computer.
To actually get the files out of BuddyBackup, right click on the folder name in the folder tree on the left side of the explorer, and choose Recover files.
Once you have got the files you need, you can exit the program. The owner of the PC is now safe to uninstall BuddyBackup if they wish.
Note that when you exit BuddyBackup whilst running in guest mode, all the private working files BuddyBackup uses will be deleted for your privacy (of course the files you recovered in step 7 will remain).
If you use the steps followed above, then no space will be wasted on your friend's PC.
Disaster recovery without using the guest mode
The above method uses the guest mode because this makes sure that no files are left on your friend's computer, and also it helps deal with situations where they already have BuddyBackup installed.
You may, however, be in a position to recover your files using your own computer (if you have got a replacement or a repaired one for example).
In this case, simply reinstall BuddyBackup as normal (as described here), except when setting up, select the option saying I already have a BuddyBackup account. All you have to do then is re-enter your original username and password.
In the same way as described above, your lost files will be recovered. The only difference is that you can carry on using BuddyBackup as normal, backing up new sets of files if you wish.
